Is God a Law-Breaker? – “Steven Furtick, pastor of the Southern Baptist Mega-Church Elevation Church is no stranger to controversy. His image features prominently in his church beginning with coloring pages provided to the children. The members of Elevation Church are told to ‘follow the visionary.’ Furtick is also a well-known fan of false teacher T.D. Jakes (Elevation has hosted Bishop Jakes and Furtick has preached at Jakes’ church). Last year Pastor Steven, as he is known around Elevation, got into a bit of hot water when it was revealed that he was building a 16,000 square foot mansion in an exclusive gated enclave. Furtick’s fusion of revivalistic, soft-prosperity, self-help preaching is regularly punctuated by the slap of drums and grind of the Hammond Organ. All of this along with his seemingly constant experimentation with his personal appearance has made Elevation Church one of the largest churches in the Southern Baptist stable.”

God Broke Antinomianism for Love – “Furtick is wanting to emphasize that the gospel is better than the law (I think), and this is true enough. In fact, we should all be eager to emphasize that, as Paul does in 2 Corinthians 3. The gospel’s superiority to the law is the essence of sound Christian preaching, because in fact the gospel (not the law) is the essence of sound Christianity. (In fact, I wish Furtick’s regular preaching offered up more of the emphasis of the finished work of Christ rather than regular sets of steps and tips and pick-me-ups based on human potential, which, whether he realizes it or not, is a pretty legalistic way of preaching.) But there is a biblical way to express this important truth, and then there is Furtick’s way. Furtick’s way is to say that God breaks the law ‘for love.’ But this only makes sense of his illustration, not of anything the Bible actually teaches.”

Why Do We Call Him Lord? – “Jesus is Lord. That is the single, central, foundational, and distinguishing article of Christianity. It is also the first essential confession of faith every true Christian must make: ‘If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved’ (Romans 10:9).”

Speaking the truth about the “Dragon Lady” and sex-reassignment surgery – “Most people reading this would probably agree that something has gone deeply awry with any person who would do this to themselves. Many people would probably also agree that something is deeply wrong with a medical profession that would allow surgeons to take part in this. If you believe that, however, it raises questions about transgenderism and sex-reassignment surgery in general. On what basis can you condemn the “dragon lady” but celebrate sex-reassignment surgery?”

Fight like Paul – “Twitter, blogs, and Instagram are filled with recent conflicts and the need to join the latest crusade. Some pastor of a mega church says something bad [often it is really bad too and makes me cringe even hearing it] and boom, the drama cycle continues. Billy Bob (sorry if that’s your name) says something. Johnny-Blog-Boy — sorry if that’s your nickname 😉 responds. Then somehow Twitter goes bezerk. Billy’s crew gets in the game pointing out Johnny’s error. Johnny’s crew picks up swords. Both side clash, fight. People stay up late at night. Work is halted, there’s a war on Twitter and my 140 characters will finish the fight #micdrop, get coffee.”
